The Fall 2008 Teaching Excellence Series will be held in the Starry Conference Room, Rovetta Business Building, room 214 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. on the following dates:

September 18, 2008 - Minimizing Risk and Maximizing Return: The Value of a Positive Attitude, Positive Reinforcement and Sincerity with William Woodyard, J.D. , a 2007-08 FSU Undergraduate Teaching Award Winner from the College of Business. Professor Woodyard believes that creating a positive learning experience for the student is the responsibility of the instructor. Being honest, realistic, using humor, setting high standards, and admitting to mistakes will maximize the classroom experience for both student and instructor.

November 20, 2008 - Strategies for Effective Seminars for Undergraduates with Frank Gunderson, Ph.D.

Teaching Tips - Week 2

  • Create a cheat sheet for learning student names. Put your class photo roster in a compact format with 40 students on a single page. Here's how. (Acrobat icon 332 Kb)

  • Relate to your students better by understanding how FSU's diverse student population impacts the teaching and learning environment. Read Instruction at FSU, Chapter 4, Knowing Your Students (Acrobat icon 84 Kb) for course planning and delivery ideas that take advantage of classroom diversity rather than letting it be a hindrance to effective learning and discourse.
  • Maintaining Professional Classroom Relations

Sixty-seven to ninety-three percent of your communication to students is nonverbal –what are you communicating in the classroom? Maximize student learning and your effectiveness as an instructor. In this on-demand video FSU Vice President of Student Affairs Dr. Mary Coburn and Associate Dean of Students Dr. Robin Leach examine classroom management issues and the role of the professional educator.
